TOWN OF HOLLAND
COUNCIL ON AGING
Minutes of meeting held On June 6, 2007
Meeting opened at 10:15 a.m.

PRESENT: COA members: Frank Antonovitch, Lowell Nixon, Olive Nixon, John Reed, Brad Noble, and Harold Hewinson. Others: Senior Center Director: Margaret Crock, Outreach Worker: Deb Tierney.

ABSENT:     Sara Meier and alternate member, Susan Sanders.

Minutes of May 2, 2007, accepted.

REPORTS:
OUTREACH WORKER Deb Tierney.
On May7th, Jerry Supernant from Sturbridge spoke to us about tales from his own adventures. On June 6th at 4:30, Judy Yaffe spoke on the V.A. Aid and Attendance pensions for qualifying veterans and spouses. On June 20th we will have a mini Health Fair at the Senior Center from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. It would include various screenings and tests, i.e. vision, hearing, bone density and pre-stroke. Motion approved to purchase 240, 41 cent stamps and to fund a harmonica player to entertain us in July. I will give a list of supplies needed to Brad for approval. ?We spent $2,000 on 20 families during this year’s heating season from the Butterworth Funds. A summary of the two conferences I attended in May is on file with the Secretary.  

SENIOR CENTER DIRECTOR: Margaret Crock.
In May , 943 contacts made, 158 seniors served, 422 attended senior center, 80 attended congregate meals and the balance includes cards & games (121), exercise (28), senior tax work off program (16), an estimated 82 at the Memorial Day event, intergenerational program (61) – 32 mugs given to the center by the 3rd graders, other activities make up the difference. We wish to thank the 3rd graders for this wonderful display in our main room.  Everyone should come to the Center to see the artistic talent of the students. Motion approved to reimburse Margaret for stamps purchased in the amount of $17.80.   

FINANCIAL: Brad Noble, Treasurer  
 Expenditures in May  were: telephone $57.62, M Crock salary $540.58, Deb Tierney wages $627.46, Electric $101.51, Supplies and service $280.99, Gas $283.38, Don Sanders services $288.00, Newsletter $86.30, Deb Tierney mileage $51.45, Lumber & supplies $189.62, Wax and supplies $203.31 and Trash pick up $25.57. We received one month (March) GSSSI outreach grant of $583.33.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE: Margaret Crock & Olive Nixon
Corinne Lavallee is still working on “no-sew blankets” for service men. She is waiting for material. There is no cost related to this project. Mike from Holland Pizza will be providing us lunch at the center on June 19th Motion approved to have one exercise class per week at a cost of $15.00 for the instructor. Corinne would like to prepare a simple meal on Thursday’s, from 11:00 to 1:00. Approved by the COA.

SENIOR TAX ABATEMENT PROGRAM: Margaret Crock and Harold Hewinson.
Year to date charges are senior center $2223.15, tax collector $361.80, elementary school $2,102.50 and Assessors $292.50.

BUILDING MAINTENANCE:  Paul Gillis (absent)     
Written report given to Brad for discussion. Informed Paul that we still have not received the invoice from Richard Lucier for work done in April. Paul will follow up.

FRIENDS OF HOLLAND SENIORS:  No report
                                   
All of the above reports were accepted by the Council on Aging.

OLD BUSINESS
Paul’s report on running a food pantry indicated extensive record keeping and bookkeeping plus records by amounts and weight of who received surplus food.  No action was taken on this program. Paul supplied a brochure on awnings which was passed around to all members. No action was taken at this time. Discussion on charging for use of the Senior Center resulted in the following action.  Brad will find out what other COA’s charge and how the money is handled.  The application for room use was approved with slight modifications.  The application must be submitted at least one month in advance in order to get COA approval.
 NEW BUSINESS
A memo given to Selectpersons to renew COA membership for the following persons: Two year terms of Lowell Nixon, Olive Nixon, and John Reed and One year terms for Margaret Crock and Deborah Tierney. Motion approved to use Senior Center for distributing food from Serve New England. Corinne to look into details before any action is taken. Election of officers was held.  Frank Antonovitch – Chairman, Lowell Nixon – Vice Chairman, Brad Noble – Secretary/Treasurer.  As July 4th is a holiday, the next meeting of the COA will be on July 3rd. Notice will be posted in the Town Hall.  

COMPUTER UPDATE
Thanks to Mr. Peret, Windows XP Professional system has been installed in one new computer.  It was agreed that we would not ask Cox to come and complete the installation until all computers are programmed. Brad to purchase another XP Professional system along with 2 mouse’s and 3 keyboards.
